When Nona Digital first started out, they offered general web development and digital marketing services to anyone in need. However, as time went on, the team at Nona Digital realized that in order to be successful, they needed to specialize.

Their big breakthrough came when they discovered the opportunity in the market for helping small businesses with their online presence. They shifted the focus of their business to digital marketing and web development, and it was a natural fit as they already had the technical expertise and the relationships with small businesses.

As they continued to work with small businesses, they learned the importance of being flexible and adapting to market changes. They also realized that they were a good fit for “not safe to fail” projects such as those in the fintech and blockchain industries, this helped them to clearly define their target client base and niche.

One of the keys to their success was the emphasis on collaboration and co-creation. Nona Digital found that by working closely with their clients and understanding their needs, they were able to build a strong reputation and portfolio of work. This helped them establish themselves as experts in their field and set them apart from competitors.

After several years of running a successful services business, the team at Nona Digital was ready for something new, something more impactful. They were approached by Yoco, an organization that help small businesses to accept payments and more, and realized that this was an opportunity for them to take the experience and talent they had built over the years and direct it towards something that truly mattered and made a positive impact in people’s lives. In the end, Nona Digital sold their company to Yoco.

In conclusion, Nona Digital learned that being flexible and adaptable is crucial for a small business, especially in the fast-paced digital world. Specializing in a niche where they could become experts helped them stand out from their competitors and secure better outcomes for their clients. Collaboration and co-creation were also key in building a strong reputation and portfolio of work, leading ultimately to the successful sale of their company.

More about Mike:

With over 20 years as an ‘in the trenches’ entrepreneur, I have developed a deep understanding, capability, and passion for small business operating systems and leadership.

Together with some of my favourite humans we built and grew Nona Digital to become a globally respected software design and development agency with a focus on FinTech and Blockchain scale-ups.

As a result of a deep focus on our positioning, Nona was acquired by Yoco in 2022 and as a result, I am privileged to head up the Product Partnerships function as well as Yoco’s entry into Web3.

I was lucky enough to be introduced to Blockchain in 2012 and have had a passion for the space ever since. I have given talks and workshops on blockchain and crypto on 3 continents, the first of which was in 2018…and I would still not refer to myself as an expert

My podcast is what it says on the tin: ‘How to be Moderately Successful’ and is really just about me sharing my own experience of what’s worked and what hasn’t…and people seem to like that.

I moved to Australia in 2019 and really love it here and am grateful to be here but I do miss Cape Town.

Outside of Yoco, you’ll find me on my mountain bike, with my family outdoors or working with an exciting small business leadership team…wherever possible listening to an audiobook or podcast.
